If I’m not working, eating or sleeping – I’m dancing.
I’ve been a dancer my whole life. I began in ballet, tap, and jazz before expanding my repertoire with modern, lyrical, and hip-hop. I did some ballet, tap and modern in college and eventually found my calling with the SU ballroom and swing teams.
Ever since then, ballroom and swing have taken over my life. I’m more than okay with that.
April 2017 was the SU Ballroom team’s first ever showcase. The goal was to bring together different communities of local dancers (swing, ballroom, tango, etc.) for a night of performances and social dancing. So that’s what we did.
My job was to spread the word about the event. We wanted to reach a larger audience than other school dance groups – we wanted to reach the entire Syracuse community. I knew that flyers around campus simply wouldn’t cut it. So, I started networking and reaching out to local media stations. By the time the showcase rolled around, we had coverage in Syracuse.com, the Post-Standard newspaper, several Cumulus Media radio stations (including an interview on 93Q’s “Ted and Amy in the Morning” show) and thenewshouse.com.
I produced the print collateral for the show, too.
After I graduated, the amazing opportunity to coach the Syracuse University Ballroom and Swing teams arose. I stepped up to the plate and started working on dancers’ development, competition patterns and choreography. In April of 2018, over 100 people attended the second annual SU Ballroom and Swing Showcase. By April 2019, that number grew to 130. The show encompassed over 45 performers and team morale was at an all-time high.
